Kushinagar is situated just outside Gorakhpur in eastern U.P, India. This is where the Buddha left his body. He was born close by at a place called Lumbini which is now part of Nepal- a distance of less than 100 kms. To cater to the large number of pilgrims drawn to this area, Welcomgroup decided to build a small hotel.

Designed around two courts and set in a lychee orchard, the plan attempted to imitate a monastery and create an oasis. Little did we realize this area was controlled by local war lords who brought in armed men to drive away the contractors. Today the shell of the building remains resembling the other Buddhist ruins that exist in this area.
