Having worked with craftspeople all her life, Jaya wanted to live in a village but also in Delhi. She found Khirkee village suited her needs and asked me to design a house on a site that was barely 20 ft. wide but about 90 ft. long.

The narrowness of the plot led to the house being designed as a 'street'. It is a kind of walk through with spaces for living, dining and bedrooms appearing on the way. The owner accepted the design without the smallest alteration (a rare moment in the life of an architect). The design succeeds in making the house part of the village and no one would suspect from the unassuming frontage that there are courts and verandahs inside.
