Named after the old mosque of Khirkee, the sculpture gallery was built in brick and mud like the village buildings surrounding it. The concept was to bring alive the villages of Delhi that were being swamped by suburbia.

The dome was built using no shuttering and the structure had a minimal amount of concrete. Windows and doors are made of pinewood and the exterior has a stucco finish and is whitewashed. Plenty of natural light enters the gallery and later the building was made self sufficient in electricity and water by introducing solar panels and a submersible solar pump.

As India's first exclusive gallery for sculptors, it was a platform for relatively unknown sculptors to exhibit their work. Many have become famous since then.
