We then moved to a more permanent shelter that included military barracks and government flats until my parents were sent off to Beijing where we stayed in an exquisite courtyard house. Set in walled spaces adjacent to the roads, the Hutong created a world of their own, once inside.
From one ancient civilization we moved to another - Egypt. My mother, who had started painting seriously, rented a houseboat that was moored on the banks of the Nile. These magnificent boats were used to travel up and down the Nile in an earlier era. They had well appointed cabins, decorated living spaces, along with a grand deck. Moored in the heart of Cairo, the houseboat was an enviable second home.
