Designing the East-West school was perhaps a culmination of many experiments and ideologies I have followed over the years. Sophie Tenbroeck was an American born in India in the 1920s. Here parents set up a bookshop in Mumbai.

Sophie settled in Bangalore and started the East-West school and wanted a new building with a quality that would represent the ideology of her school.

She suggested I go and see Shiva Ganga-a hill close to Bangalore that is made of rock and looks like a lingam from one side and a Nandi (bull) from the other. At the foot of the hill is a small village with a single street.
